Quest for the Best Overnight Oatmeal

Looking for a wonderfully smelling, warm, comforting, yummy breakfast that is ready for you to dish up with your first cuppa morning joe? Me, too. I have found several methods, which are interesting enough to give a go.

Here's one with no crockpot required:
Easy Overnight Steel Cut Oatmeal
(This is the awesome. Period. In fact, it's so good, that I am copying the recipe here, for future reference.)

  • 4 cups (32 ounces) water
  • 1 cup steel cut oats
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • optional – dark or light brown sugar to mix in for a touch of sweetness
  • toppings such as toasted walnuts, fresh or dried blueberries, strawberries, sliced banana, cranberries, dried cherries, sliced peaches, you name it
Get out a medium saucepan, soup pan or Dutch oven and pour in the 4 cups water. Turn the heat to high and bring the water to a rapid boil.

When the water comes to a full boil, pour in the steel cut oats and salt.
Give a quick stir and let the oats cook for 1 minute. I always set my timer here.
After one minute, turn off the heat, give the oats a quick stir, cover and then let them sit out overnight. Yep, that’s all there is to it. Easy peasy.
The next morning, turn the heat to medium and stir occasionally until the oats are heated through. There will be a bit of water in the mixture still, but the oats will thicken up as they sit.
A crockpot recipe from Alton Brown that got mixed reviews may deserve a shot: Overnight Oatmeal

I found this from Frugal Upstate and the interesting corresponding experimentation: Overnight Crockpot Oatmeal

And, if you don't want your oatmeal in a bowl, here's another way to enjoy steel-cut oats: Yummy Scones

Last, but not least, if you want to do it the old-fashioned way, try this recipe from the Vintage Cook: Porridge
